Field Trip to the Museum of Flight

On November 18, Middle School journeyed a long four hours to South Seattle to the Museum of Flight.  We went on a tour called "The Dream of Flight," and our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable.  Did you know that until 1930, passing out food and coffee and tending to the passengers was a pilot's duty?  In 1930, Ellen Church, a student-pilot and registered nurse convinced Boeing management to hire women as stewardesses, as this image would alleviate the widespread fear of flying.  She and seven other nurses became the first airline stewardesses.
The students jumped on a couple simulators, and there was a clear favorite because you could hear the girls screaming from the other side of the hangar.  The larger simulator didn't make anyone scream at all, so what's the point, right?  In the smaller simulator, the riders could control their movement, which meant dangerous jerking back and forth and long durations upside-down screaming.

If it's not broken, there is a unanimous recommendation to stick with the small simulator.  Skip the big simulator, as it provides no nausea, no trauma, and no possible vomiting.

Thanks to Arnold for driving the long haul and Miss Roberta for being a great chaperone.

Veterans Day 2010

Middle school worked diligently on fifty bags of Indian tea and fifty place-mats for the tables at the Veteran's Day Breakfast. Students wrote "Indian Tea" and "Thank you" in Quileute, and "Happy Veteran's Day."

Veterans were honored at the Quileute Tribal School and given regalia and bags of Indian Tea.

From the Forks Forum: "Beverly Lauton of LaPush hands City of Forks Attorney/Planner Rod Fleck a Veterans Day gift of Indian tea at the Forks Chamber of Commerce meeting held Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 10. Fleck is an Air Force veteran."

Canning

Our second canning event went over GANGBUSTERS; we cut over one hundred salmon last Friday, upping our total to 250 jars of salmon for Elders Week! The students cut so much that someone needed a Band-Aid for a blister, and happily that was the only Band-Aid necessary. Not one bloody gash or loose limb, and that means a lot to a klutz like me.

Unfortunately, everyone got SO tired after the 80th fish, that we stopped cutting the skins and fins off. I know expert canners might scoff at jars of skins and fins, but we were exhausted! Anyway, it doesn't look AS BAD AS THIS.

Thus, we really have to honor Mr. Roy Black who cleaned and filleted the ONE HUNDRED fish last Friday morning all by himself. Also, thank you to the High Tide Seafood company for their donations.

I'm really thankful to my Superpara Angel, Miss Stephanie, and Miss Shelly for facilitating these fishy extravaganzas. Ms Earley also got her Home Ec groove on to help us when we were tired. And I'm really proud of the students for their efforts to create this gift for their Elders. Good job, y'all.
