The Quileute Alphabet

In 2007, the Tribal Council set up a two-year Quileute Revitilization Project with the goal of encouraging the use of Quileute words and phrases in everyday village life.

Elders' Traditions

“Sustainable resources” is not a new concept. Tribes of the Pacific Northwest have always practiced resource management. Harvesting what is needed for a “moderate living” (in the words of the federal courts), and harvesting so enough is left for the future generations, are tribal ways of existence. When conservation becomes necessary, it is generally because sustainable practices have been ignored—when careless development or excess harvest changes the balance.

Like other First Nations farther north along the Pacific coast, traditional stories have Raven as the main trickster character.

Quileute History

Oriented to the ocean, Quileutes fished and hunted sea mammals, and were recognized as the best sealers on the coast. In the early 1900s, a canoe similar to those used by the Quileutes was outfitted with a mast and sailed around the world. Quileute whaling canoes traveled as far north as Southeast Alaska and as far south as California.

Quileute Natural Resources

The Quileute Natural Resources Mission- to provide treaty year-round fishing opportunity within the Quileute Usual and Accustomed Treaty Area for Quileute Tribal members, for commercial, ceremonial, and subsistence purposes; and to assure primary hunting and gathering rights can be exercised within the Treaty Ceded Lands.
